Referential Cohesion in Hungarian: A Developmental Study
نویسنده
چکیده
Discursive functions are shared across all languages, but each language uses different linguistic means to appropriately establish referential cohesion. Children’s mastery of this cohesion in narrative texts develops gradually and is influenced by development in syntax. Consequently, speakers can employ different strategies, and among the various structural configurations of arguments, some are preferred in discourse. Our study examines how Hungarian children and adults establish referential cohesion in narrative texts, by using different strategies, and whether they have a preferred argument structure.

Towards a Literary Machine Translation: The Role of Referential Cohesion
What is the role of textual features above the sentence level in advancing the machine translation of literature? This paper examines how referential cohesion is expressed in literary and non-literary texts and how this cohesion affects translation. We first show in a corpus study on English that literary texts use more dense reference chains to express greater referential cohesion than news. W...
متن کاملUse of Cohesive Ties in English as a Foreign Language Students’ Writing
This study aims to understand certain linguistic and semantic resources for the text construction, namely the constructs of cohesion, coherence. The analysis of cohesive ties was conducted on the writing samples of 40 subjects (20 most coherent and 20 least coherent) Iranian undergraduates of English. This prompted us to identify the dominant types of cohesive devices used in most coherent writ...
متن کاملAutomated analysis of written narratives reveals abnormalities in referential cohesion in youth at ultra high risk for psychosis.
Schizophrenia and at-risk populations are suggested to exhibit referential cohesion deficits in language production (e.g., producing fewer pronouns or nouns that clearly link to concepts from previous sentences). Much of this work has focused on transcribed speech samples, while no work to our knowledge has examined referential cohesion in written narratives among ultra high risk (UHR) youth us...
متن کاملWhen Do Standard Approaches for Measuring Vocabulary Difficulty, Syntactic Complexity and Referential Cohesion Yield Biased Estimates of Text Difficulty?
Many widely-used approaches for assessing text difficulty provide a single prediction equation that is assumed to hold for texts belonging to a variety of different genres. This paper demonstrates that such models tend to overpredict the difficulty of informational texts while simultaneously underpredicting the difficulty of literary texts. Mechanisms that may account for these effects are exam...
